Subject: WHO Conference on Health and Climate 27 ? 29 August, 2014 - INVITATION/REQUEST OF EXPRESSION OF INTEREST TO HLCP WGCC
As you are probably aware, the World Health Organization is organising a Conference on Health and Climate on the 27 – 29 August, 2014 at WHO Headquarters, Geneva.
The Conference objective is to empower the health and sustainable development communities to:
1. Enhance resilience and protect health from climate change
2. Identify the health benefits associated with reducing greenhouse gas emissions
3. Support health-promoting climate change policies
The Conference will feature presentations from experts in the health, climate and development sectors. Interactive sessions will provide delegates with an opportunity to discuss a) how best to strengthen health systems in the face of climate risks and b) how to promote health whilst mitigating climate change.
Since 2008, the World Health Organization has shown leadership in raising awareness of the threats posed by climate change to health. Specifically, WHO has provided evidence-based technical guidance and has piloted approaches to protect health from climate risks. There is now an urgent need to advance a more systematic approach to implementing health protection, led by the health community, in coordination with others.
Participation at the conference is by invitation only because of limited room capacity. Some of your senior managers (in particular from organizations working on health and climate-related issues) will receive a personal invitation from the Conference Organising Committee by the end of the month. In addition we have a small number of places available for other UN agency representatives. If you are interested in attending we kindly ask you to send an expression of interest to maierom@... by 19 May 2014.
WHO is not able to cover the cost of travel to, or accommodation in, Geneva. Information on recommended travel and accommodation arrangements will soon be made available on the WHO website.
