      World Health Day  8th April

What a worker linked/ associated with Oncological Sciences has got to do?

Awareness of cancer remains dismal in the world scenario. “Might is Right” and  several health issues keep dominating pushing cancer in the back benches. Started with infectious disease, came cardiac and then HIV , now road accidents. Cancer grows as it is never given a serious thought  by Public, Practitioners ,

Politicians ,Policy makers and Producers (the corporate houses) (5 Ps) of the country.

World Health Day (WHD) is another day that can be used for cancer awareness and to tell the world about the overall cancer burden.

WHD is one occasion when social reformers can come out fully against the circumstances that have prevailed and helped  progression  and explosion of cancer cases. The Industrial  or Agricultural carcinogenesis. New threat: the Pollution Carcinogenesis. This is over and above Tobacco carcinogenesis  that is being encouraged ,once again by  5 Ps.

WHD is the day to remind  health conscious and concerned Prime Minister of India  and his  proactive  Union Health Minister that their efforts towards  more budgetary allocations shall certainly be more effective if  phase wise,  serialised alternatives are provided to tobacco industry and tobacco workers   to reach  a time bound total ban on tobacco.

WHD  has to remind the public and the politician that it is “Pennywise and Pound Foolish”- what you earn in tobacco revenue , you lose  many more times on health care provisions to treat tobacco related disease.

What you provide in name of employment  to tobacco worker you lose in terms of loss of employment due to  death of tobacco user.

The unemployed tobacco worker can be re employed elsewhere may be in the same area if tobacco industry replacement programme is implemented . A programme for which the previous  Health Minister has chalked out a  masterplan.

The lost life due to tobacco related disease cannot be retrieved. The bread winner is gone! There is  no shortage of   evidences  that the orphaned children have taken to crime or prostitution to run the feed the mouths in the family.

The WHD is to remind the pathetic state of cancer treatment centres and their waiting list  at the same time the high cost of treatment and  extortion that takes place in corporate sector five star hospital.

WHD is to remind shut down department of cancer treatment and radiation therapy machines for want of radiotherapy technicians , medical physicists and radiation safety officers. Why are there not enough of departments in cancer treatment centre to conduct post Graduate M.Sc. Medical physics courses to take care of this  problem that is plaguing cancer treatment centres all over the country.

WHD is to remind the  total defunct status of  cancer treatment departments in  five out of six teaching medical institutions right in the capital of India. Four  do not have mandatory  brachytherapy equipments to treat commonest Indian female cancers, two  do not have basic radiation facility   one does not want to go full swing with its all the three teleradiation  and one brachytherapy facility  and managing with one teletherapy facility. One department  has lost its recognition  as post graduate teaching department  of Delhi University, being one of the oldest and first to start PG courses in radiotherapy in India.

The WHD is to remind the colossal wastage that goes waste in HIV/AID related publicity.  A composite publicity with tuberculosis and cancer  could bring better results when compared to HIV alone publicity.

WHD is to  remind policy makers on more space  for  cancer in NRHM,  Sarva Shiskha Abhiyan and  MNREGA .

WHD is to remind the necessity of Mayo Clinic Concept  or Indianised   “ Chambal Concept’  when the  rich pays for the poor for the treatment of cancer and other diseases.

WHD reminds the necessity of  health insurance , rural health insurance , Old age health Insurance  and child health Insurance , if possible exclusive  female health insurance  so that  insurance companies understand their responsibilities.

      Last but not the least

WHD  is to remind  on creation  of more post graduate and post doctoral degree courses  seats  as there is a  terrible and uncomfortable shortage of specialists

.Most of the medical colleges do not have a qualified  medical oncologists, and MCH degree holder surgical oncologist.  There are still several  medical colleges where even  the functional radiotherapy department does not exist. Barring miniscule, non of the teaching medical institutions have department of geriatrics while more and more  geriatric populations will come to the hospitals ....thanks to modern medical care.
