NATIONAL SEMINAR ON CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION OF LAKES (CAROL-2008)

16-17 October 2008, Nagpur (Maharastra), India

Organized by National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee 247667, India
in Collaboration with National Environmental Engineering Research
      Institute, Nagpur 440 020

      BACKGROUND

The increasing demand for fresh water due to ever growing population,
calls for proper conservation and management of all the available
fresh water resources, including lakes. Lakes need special attention
as they are quite often the catalysts in the development of the
region by supplying water for variety of uses such as drinking and
civil water supply, industrial supply, irrigation, aqua-culture,
recreation and tourism etc. However, many lakes are reported to have
undergone quantitative and qualitative degradation in the last few
decades. They are under increasing stress due to growing demands,
urbanization and human interference in the catchments. Heavy
sedimentation and siltation, organic pollution, eutrophication,
reduced inflows etc are some of the major problems which are common
to most of the lakes. Many lakes are showing impact of elevated
levels of pollution and nutrients rendering their waters highly
eutrophic and unsuitable for many uses. Since behaviour of the lake
ecosystem depends to a large extent on its hydrological regime,
understanding the hydrological regime of the lakes is very
significant to develop strategies for their conservation,
      restoration and management .

Perusal of issues related to conservation, restoration and management
of lakes to exchange the views and ideas on different aspects of lake
hydrology, limnology etc. and the need for bringing together various
      researchers/scientists, academicians/scholars, engineers,
bureaucrats/policy makers, planners, managers and non-governmental
organizations (NGOs), the present National Seminar is being organized
by National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), Roorkee (For details about
NIH, please visit: http:/www.nih.ernet.in) in collaboration with
National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI),
Nagpur during 16-17 October, 2008 at NEERI, Nagpur ((For details
      about NEERI, please visit: http:/www.neeri.res.in).

      MAJOR THEMES OF SEMINAR

      1. Science of lakes/Basic hydrological and limnological
      processes in lake ecosystems
      2. Lake water quality problems: monitoring, assessment and
      remediation.
      3. Role of new technologies in lake studies (Isotopes
application, remote sensing & GIS, modelling and DSS, etc.).
      4. Impact of human interference in lakes/catchments on their
ecosystems (Land use changes, industrialization, urbanization,
      agricultural activities).
      5. Conservation, restoration and management strategies for lakes.
      6. Social and economic aspects, peoples participation/mass
awareness, etc. for sustainability of lakes.

      ABOUT THE VENUE

Nagpur is located at geographical center of India, at about 360 m
above msl. The town is dominated by the British fort built in 1818 on
the twin hills of Sitabuldi in the centre of the city. There are
several fine old reservoirs (lakes) notably Shukrawari (Jumma) Talao,
Ambazari and Telankhedi, and many parks in and around the city. The
climate of Nagpur follows a typical seasonal monsoon weather pattern.
The average temperature varies from 26 C to 32 C during October. The
annual rainfall varies from 606 mm to 1993 mm (average: 1205 mm) and
