I encourage all to watch the recently aired NOVA episode titled "Earth From Space", it is outstanding -> http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/space/earth-from-space.html
The subject is Earth science advancements through the use of NASA satellites. They cover solar flares and how the Earth's magnetic field protects us from them.
What I found even more interesting is how these satellites are constantly sweeping the planet with radar (RF emissions) and several other sensing technologies spread across the visible and non-visible frequency spectrum. How's that for a potential source of the Hum?

- Danyele....I am about 2 or a little more than 2 hours away from White and Van Buren counties. I tell you what....if you hear the hum in those counties you know it is coming from the earth or the atmosphere itself because those areas are about as rural as you can get!!!
About a month ago, I spent a weekend in Nashville which is 3 hours from where I live and I did not hear the hum once while I was there. That was during a time frame when the hum was still quite loud here at my home....so go figure!!!

Yes!! Ours seemed to be worse more in the mornings too! Normally it is loudest 11pm – around 3am, but it changed to be worse about 8am –on.
OK, definitely connected --- South Central Indiana and Eastern Tennessee. (I will be caving in August in White and VanBuren Counties– let me know if you are around there)Danyele...I have had the same experience here in E. TN. The last several weeks have been the best and the quietest weeks in a long time. I have also noticed a change in the timing of the loudest hum during the day. It used to start up pretty bad around 10 PM....now it is delayed to much later during the night and when I wake up in the morning it is the strongest. Thankfully, I am off doing things soon thereafter and therefore it does not bother me much then. There are also many more ambient sounds at that time of day that help to mask the hum. So...I am with you...what changed and what is different now than before????

Unforunately the Aurora is too variable to relate exactly to the HUM, it is not on/off , I have noticed the HUM was loud once when the Aurora was large enough to be seen at the USA/CA border. Solar activity may be the cause of the HUM , something like whatever is causing global warming may be the catalyst, hence the recent proliferation. Also, it may have been with us for centuries but means of reporting were not abundant. I have a theory why the UK was an early reporter. In the early 60/70s , unlike America , there were probably 6 ot 7 national daily newspapers, it was a paper version of the Internet as far as news was concerned, maybe polution is the enabler ( and boy did we have ploution in the 60's in the UK) and the proliferation of newsapapers was the reason it was reported in the UK early.
