      JUDGE CLARENCE THOMAS

Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas has not spoken during oral arguments for five years.

When they asked Justice Thomas why
He won't speak in the Court, he was wry
      In his written response.
      He displayed nonchalance,
Said "no comment" is my reply.
      (Kirk Miller)

That silent judge Clarence of Thomas
Is clearly a man who's as dumb as
      A man who's been jinx'd
By that timeless old sphinx --
That silent old Clarence of Thomas.

When queried on silence our Clarence,
      Averred that with lawyer's appearance,
      He'd rather they'd speak
Than by judges be tweaked --
      A case for judicial forbearance.

      Tis the activist judges' belief
Their time with the lawyers' too brief.
      These others have noted
      That ere they had voted
They wanted to question the brief.

Our Clarence has not broken the seals
      On the lawyers' written appeals.
      What's written's not read
      No word's in his head.
      Is this illit'racy reveal'd?
      (Lars Hanson)
