Syriac Session being organized for American Society of Church History Annual Spring Meeting.
This is a last minute notice and call, but I have been nudged by a member of the program committee to see if a session on a Syriac topic can be included in the upcoming spring meeting of the American Society of Church History, Montreal , Quebec , April 16-20. The deadline for submissions is October 15, so I am putting out the word through Hugoye-list and a few other channels. This is an excellent opportunity to broaden our base among scholars and teachers of all periods of the history of Christianity.
The webpage for this meeting is: http://www.churchhistory.org/montrealcallforpapers.html
ASCH prefers a panel consisting of a chair, three presenters, and a respondent. The respondent is typically a “senior scholar” in the area.
I am proposing a general theme that would allow a range of papers. This is the 50th anniversary of Arthur Vööbus’ History of Asceticism in the Syrian Orient, Volume 1. Therefore:
“Towards a New History of Asceticism in the Syrian Orient..” I know that’s clever! You do not have to refer to Vööbus’ work, but simply deal with the now expansive field of Syriac asceticism.
If you are interested at all or intrigued, please contact me directly at my regular email: rkitchen@.... I would especially like to appeal to graduate students, younger scholars, Canadians, someone who would simply like to visit Old Montréal. Veterans in Syriac studies are, of course, most welcome to participate. If one of our Syriac scholars is going to be present at the meeting anyway and would be willing to be the Chair, that would be excellent.
What is required is: (1) Summary of the paper, max. 250 words.
(2) Biographical paragraph of the presenter, max. 250 words.
(3) Current mailing address, email address and phone number.
(4) Presenter will have to register for the spring meeting.
We only have until Wednesday, October 15. So please think and act quickly!
