The Golden Age of Software Developers is here: Html5 Mobile and Cloud Computing

Everyone who is familiar with technology trends knows that Html5 is the future of Internet. Usually when people talk about Html5 it is in the context of Websites. They think that they will just start using Html5 tags in their websites with ASP.Net, Servlets/JSP, or PHP, etc. on the server side and a relational database at the backend. This is true when you are talking about small to medium scale websites, i.e. the thin client and thick server architecture. But with the wide spread adoption of Html5 and a move towards mobile and cloud computing, a paradigm shift is occurring. The thick client and thin server is fast becoming the norm in the software industry. The new kind of client is being built using Html5 and JavaScript. It has a touch based user interface to support tablets and mobile phones. Most of the functionality of the application is contained in the client using JavaScript i.e. a thick client. Most importantly the client is installed on the client machine not reloaded every time the user visits the website. The age of Html5 Mobile App has arrived. Windows 8, Android, iPhone/iPad, Firefox OS, Chrome OS, and BlackBerry 10 will be the platform for these Html5 Mobile Apps.

To support these billions of mobile devices and Html5 mobile apps a new kind of server and database is required. They must be able to support millions of users concurrently and at minimum cost i.e. it must be horizontally scalable with no upfront investment requirement with a pay as you go model. Cloud computing provides the nuts and bolts to make this happen in a cost effective manner. Furthermore, as most of the code in this new architecture is being written in JavaScript on the client, it makes a lot of sense to use JavaScript on the server to write the new kind of thin server. The adoption of JavaScript based Node.js will make code portability between client and server possible. To fulfill the need of extreme scalability of databases a move towards NoSQL databases is required for non-financial apps. The internet software development community is flocking towards MongoDB as a database of choice.

These Html5 mobile apps will be sold to the end user through Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook app marketplaces. This will make marketing of these apps extremely easy and cost effective for software developers. The Golden Age of Software Developers has arrived. Where the software developers will be the new oil moguls in this new age of mobile and cloud computing, making billions of dollars for their countries. They will become the most important asset of a country.

The Situation in Pakistan: Stuck with Old Technologies

While the world is moving at an extreme speed towards this new golden age of software developers, most of our developers are still building thin client and thick server websites using ASP.NET, Java Server Pages/Servlets, PHP, etc. technologies. They do not know how to build this new kind of Html5 Mobile and Cloud Computing based app which can be sold on the software marketplaces. If we don’t act now we will be left behind in this global financial race, forever.
