After Wateen Motorola to Deploy Mobilink's WiMAX Network in Pakistan

Motorola Inc. has announced an agreement with long-standing customer Mobilink (an Orascom Telecom Company) to deploy a WiMAX 802.16e-2005 access network for the operator in Pakistan. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola will design, plan, deploy and optimize a WiMAX network for Mobilink, deliver integration and support services as well as indoor and outdoor customer premises equipment (CPE) units to enable faster adoption of the operator's WiMAX offering.
Covering major metropolitan areas such as Lahore and Islamabad, the new Motorola-based 802.16e-2005 WiMAX network will enable Mobilink to extend its current service offering beyond cellular and data offerings to high speed broadband and VoIP services for fixed line residential and business subscribers. This is Motorola's second WiMAX 802.16e network in Pakistan, with the first being a turnkey end-to-end nationwide WiMAX/IMS network awarded in 2006. This is also Motorola's fourth commercial WiMAX deployment in the Middle East and Africa region, which further reinforces Motorola's regional as well as global leadership.
Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. has selected DragonWave Inc.'s Horizon Compact high capacity IP backhaul product to provide 270 wireless backhaul links for a new nationwide WiMAX Network in Pakistan with their Mobile operator, Mobilink. Initial rollout will begin in the cities of Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore.
"The DragonWave Horizon solution is a key part of our network, providing 50Mbps to 200Mbps, carrier grade, Native Ethernet backhaul," said Tamer El Mahdi, Group CTO. "Our Network will provide residents and business users in cities across Pakistan with an affordable and portable broadband service."
Orascom Telecom is one of the largest GSM carriers operating in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia with more than 60 million customers. Pakistan is the 7th largest country in the world with a population of over 160 million people. Mobilink, a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom has opted to pursue this market with a 3.5GHz WiMAX infrastructure, and has already been piloted in three cities with proposals to cover five major metros, including in-building coverage for high value business areas.
DragonWave's Horizon product operates within both licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies in the 11GHz to 38GHz range, ensuring interference-free performance for customers' traffic. The DragonWave solution provides scalable, ultra-low latency, wire-speed native Ethernet connectivity up to 800Mbps full duplex. The system is extremely easy to deploy and manage, with a full suite of network management options.
