          $$$ for commercial units and it is much easier to just plug into a electric wall outlet. They cost more than Honda generators at Lowe's. Several people have built engines for personal use in various sizes up to 5 hp - most are very small hand held novelty models. 
           
          They are typically larger than a typical gasoline engine with similar output.

          25 commercial companies are currently working on units; http://www.energy.ca.gov/distgen/equipment/stirling_engines/vendors.html
           
          The current uses are military and space applications.
