Houston Climate Protection Alliance is visiting many of the Texas legislators to talk about energy and global warming issues.  Today I am looking for two constituents of Senator Janek to go with me on a visit to his policy aide on Thurs 5pm.    Would you like to go with me?

His district includes Bellaire, West U, West Houston, Katy, Galveston and Port Arthur.  To look up who represents you, http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/

If you cannot attend, please call or email Mr. Janek urging him to support climate protection measures, a time out on permitting for coal plants, energy efficiency incentives, and renewable energy.  His email and phone is at http://www.janek.senate.state.tx.us/

      1) Now everyone is for climate protection including the Bush Administration, Governor Perry's office and Exxon.  (see details below)

      2) Protecting the climate is MUCH cheaper than suffering the damages according to chief economist of Great Britain, Stern in his 10/30/06 report.  The economic costs of climate change will be 5% to 20% or more of GNP in perpetuity, that is forever and ever.  But protecting the climate could cost as little as 1% of GNP according to Stern, former chief economist for the World Bank.

      3) Even though they could build "clean coal" plants, aka IGCC or Integrated Gassification and Combined Cycle, they have asked for permits for dirty coal plants.

      4) The legislature should call a TIME OUT, a moratorium, on coal plants because these decisions are too important for the legislature and the public to be left out of.  The legislature should also support other bills on related issues.

DETAILS of Republican support for climate protection:
Recently Exxon, the Bush Administration, Governor Perry and others have spoken for climate protection.

Exxon, on November 3 announced donation of $1.3 million to study the capture and storage of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. They also recounted their other efforts for climate protection.  http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/DN-exxoncarbon_03bus.ART0.State.Edition1.31bd04f.html

The Bush Administration, the Wall Street Journal reported on December 4, is "signalling new interested in promoting alternative energies and curbing greenhouses gases."  They will be discussing climate protection with Democratic leaders, automakers, and the Chinese. They announced $1 billion in tax credits to companies to develop cleaner coal plants.  http://www.steel.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Industry_News&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=17956

Governor Perry's press release dated October, announcing $10 billion in new wind power for Texas, stated "For every 1000 megawatts generated by new wind sources, Texas will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by six million tons over the next 20 years."
