The same Oil companies which are supplying Oil to the West, Shell Oil company and BP, are slowly capturing the PV market (Shell as #1 and BP as #2), and GE trailing behind as number 3 (capturing both Solar & Wind share of the market). These big Western Oil companies will infact control the markets in both fossil fuels and Renewables for quite some time to come. The two big companies are not totally relying on Arab Oil, but are exploiting the oil from Central Asian Republics (former Soviet States), and newly discovered fields in Amchatka peninsula in Russia. Also, Qaddafi has yielded to their threats to let them in for exploiting oil from North Africa, in addition to Nigeria, Angola, and recently made deals in Equatorial Guinea. The Multinational Oil companies will still dictate Oil prices, and the Renewables for long time to come. By buying out Renewable manufacturers they are lining themselves up for control of Energy Market in both Fossil Fuels as well as Renewables. GE recently bought Astropower  - a PV Manufacturer in Delaware.

Here's some facts for you to ponder.
      1) Last year, photovoltaic manufacturing capacity decreased in the US by 13%.  It increased in Europe and Japan by about 40% (1).
      2) The US is going to spend (in debt) about $166 Billion in Iraq this year to secure oil supplies for another 10 to 20  years (2) - which is probably wasted money and lives.
      3) The DOE is only going to spend ~$0.12 Billion (a thousand times less than on Iraq) per year on solar photovoltaic research and development - a technology which could sustain the nation's energy suppy indeffinitely (3).

America is a democracy. This means if you work hard to make the government work for you, then it will.  If you sit back and let someone else do government - you will work for them.
