Executive Order Calls for 40 GW CHP     DOE, EPA Release Companion CHP Report

The White House issued an executive order on Aug. 30 urging industrial users to help achieve its goal of 40 GW of additional CHP by 2020. The order recommends that several federal agencies provide outreach and technical assistance, convene regional and national stakeholders to identify opportunities, and find other ways to spur investment in energy efficiency. It also cites the manufacturing industry, which consumers 30 percent of the country's energy, as a prime candidate for greater CHP implementation. The White House also recommended greater support for DOE's Better Buildings, Better Plants program.

The U.S. DOE and U.S. EPA released a report in conjunction with the executive order. "Combined Heat and Power: A Clean Energy Solution" provides an overview of CHP's benefits, barriers to its adoption, emerging drivers, and solutions to increased deployment.

The EPA CHP Partnership has added new features and updated its user-friendly CHP Emissions Calculator. The calculator now includes:

      • Calculations for CO2e, CH4 and N2O emissions
      • Fuel-specific CO2, CH4 and N2O factors that correspond to those used in EPA's Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program
      • Updated CHP technology performance values
      • The option to select T/D losses specific to a grid region
      • Data from eGRID2012 Version 1.0
      • These enhancements respond to user requests for CO2e estimates, increase the accuracy of the calculator's outputs, and align emissions factors with those used by EPA's GHG Reporting Program.
