Sounds interesting, however, I was of the impression that Houston’s average wind rate makes wind turbines not feasible in our area. Am I incorrect? From:

      Ariel,

I have a friend that's currently designing a new wind turbine electricity generation system for home use. He's an engineer and has been working on this for quite some time. What makes his design so unique is that the turning blades set horizontally, rather than vertically. The design allows for multiple turning blades to be 'stacked', which generates far more power in the same amount of space. Plus, he's working on 'hidden housing' enclosure for the tower of blades, that has a 'chimney' look to it. It's very cool. I'll post pics of the whole thing soon.

Our award winning Honeywell Wind turbine, now widely referred to as the Blade Tip Power System BTPS, has been credited with transforming traditional gear box technology into wind generators.

BTPS had addressed concerns related to size, weight, sound, vibration and open blades. The BTPS system is quiet, fast and powerful, designed to be installed where power is consumed (true distributed energy), where we live and work...where there is wind.

BTPS has a start up speed of merely 0.5 mph, unheard of in the Wind Energy Industry. The Honeywell Wind Turbine BTPS is always turning, changing the urban and rural wind industries forever.

We recognize your interest in renewable energy and will do our utmost to earn your business as we expand our technology into commercial, residential, utility, farming, towers, developed and developing countries and energy recovery applications.

I believe you mean the blades are Vertical like in a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) instead of Horizontal which is like most of the "wind mill" kinds out there that do not work as well as Vertical Axis.
There are a number of Youtube videos about people making their own VAWTs and a number of them are excellent designs.
Here are a couple I like.

One consideration about VAWT’s that many overlook is the fact that the blades are fighting the wind on the return path.

For this simple reason, VAWT have never been as efficient as a HAWT, where the blades are all working in unison and turning the same direction.

VAWT’s tell a great story, but there’s a good reason they’re seldom used on a large scale.

It could be too simple, but to put a "scoop" or deflector/foil on the windward side would indeed improve rotation? That being the side where the wind would be flowing directly against the return path of turbine. I know in water energy there is quite a curve in the amount that water may follow a rotating element. Just a thought.

                Greetings,

However, this list does serve the surrounding areas, and some of us have
enough wind to make turbines a worth while idea. I know I do.

HREG was started because all the information about solar and alternative
energy was geared to cold climates. How to use the sun for savings in
the south was not talked about, back then.

As a result, we have a membership that is from across the southern
                states, not just Houston.

                Bright Blessings,

Hi Bill, Yes, that’s been tried on smaller VAWT turbines, but doesn’t seem practical for large machines.  It also detracts from the simplicity of the machine.

Kim is correct about turbines being suitable for areas outside of Houston, particularly along the coast.

I’m also interested in an update on the three turbines Justin installed, especially the wind ball.

                  Best Regards,  Kevin

It could be too simple, but to put a "scoop" or deflector/foil on the windward side would indeed improve rotation? That being the side where the wind would be flowing directly against the return path of turbine. I know in water energy there is quite a curve in the amount that water may follow a rotating element. Just a thought.

                  Regards,

Thank you for inquiring about our systems, your interest in our products is a source of corporate pride.
