If this is the case, then I agree with Bob, you need to start a new listserv or blog and figure out a way to reach the people.

River Hill which is basicly finished , Glenelg that is cencored and Howardpubliced which without the flavor of controversy grinds to a halt . That is it for all of Howard county to express it's self . I could start a listserve or open a website but the result would be the same , no access and therefore no results . Very few of this groups members participate in discussions and almost none of you promote this group . The major contributor to Glenelg's site is Ms. Nussbaum , no discussions . I probably make half the posts here and would gladly debate Ms Nussbaum or even you Bob , even on the issue of the taxes you pay vs the number of kids I have . The point is simple , there is very little discussion on the issues promoted here in Howard county . I personally would welcome hundreds of new views . Even as a think tank this site needs controversy to survive . For example , I said that that public education is and should be for the benefit of society as a whole . Not one of you called me out for that statement having a socialist or communist overtone . Now if I were to continue here and say that the majority of you have accepted a quasi socialist government which represses your freedoms then that controversial statement may incite a response .

You might as well be in a closet speaking to yourself . I can gauarantee you all which reassures me that if each school had a site that was open to discussion that a lot would change . Well at least someone decided to take the issue of the flu seriously albeit most of Glenelg has returned from their absences and most were diagnosed with H1N1 and the vaccine is still few and far between .

            I'm sure you're right.

Nevertheless, whether one shares the experience or opinions of Jack, or not - his angst and frustration are shared by many parents in our community who feel impotent to help their children thrive in our public schools.

The experiences he has described ---- and the hostility directed toward him (which we have witnessed on this site) when he has tried (clumsily though it may seem) to be heard and get some satisfaction  --- ought to be telling us something.

Pretty much every one has tried to tell Jack that if he wants an online discussion group at GHS he would need to start one - that he cannot simply force the existing online message board to become a discussion group.

I believe one reason he keeps beating this dead horse is because he does not feel that the GHS administration and community understand his complaint that when the administration advertises, endorses, supports, encourages the existing listserve as some kind of online community ... it is 1) a misrepresentation,  2) discourages folks from joining what then seems like some kind of "opposition" movement and 3) limits the liklihood of success of what would be seen as a competing site.

In his many posts, it seems to me that what he wants is for the PTA and GHS administration to develop or at least support, advocate, encourage and advertise - on an equal basis - an open discussion group.

You are neither right nor wrong - just irrelevant.

I needed to move this post forward

Glenelg's listserve , again . Perhaps because I attached a link to this site or
perhaps I am not welcome in the school my children attend or just maybe H1N1
does not pertain to the Glenelg community . Perhaps it does not matter what I
say nor what any one else says that does not like how incompetently Glenelg is
run . As long as there is no place for parents and students to discuss issues
our tax dollars will continue to be squandered away .

As of 22 Oct 09 Glrnelg's site was listed as below and was promoted by the Principal over the past few years as a place for the community to discuss issues .

glenelghighschool@egroups.com is a communication tool for sharing information
and discussing issues relating to Glenelg High School.

Parents such as myself who attempted to discuss issues on that site were censored as well as retaliated against . With the site being changed to a message board in the last few days the charade of transparent public discussions at Glenelg has ended . The Glenelg community now has no voice in their childrens education at Glenelg . For those of you that believe that I should simply start a community group , well that was my original intention however I was warned both verbally as well as in writing by the HCPSS administration that my actions would be closely monitored by the HCPSS and that I could be sued . This stems from an incident 2 years ago when one of their teachers assaulted one of my children . I was reffered here by Ms. Vailancourt and chose to spend some time here which has probably been at you good folks expense .

It is a shame that the community is not truely welcome to participate in their childrens education at Glenelg . This is actually a violation of HCPSS policies . The actions of Glenelg's PTSA are not entirely in the best interest of the community and the behavior of it's administration warrants serious scrutiny .

The only voice left in Howard county is Howardpubliced .

                Jack

Damn if I can figure out what you are talking about. There are no messages on the Glenelg List Serve for October 22, 2009 nor was the header describing the purpose of the List Serve changed for that day.
Now, how about some documented references and not some bilge about he said, she said. Again, start your own List Serve and rave on or do you want to leach off someone else's work?

                  >

                    Hello,

I mentioned before that a personal blog may be the answer, but I need to add that it would be even more effective in conjunction with FaceBook and Twitter. People aren't waiting around anymore for others to provide platforms for them to express their ideas... they're going ahead and creating their own niches in the social networking environment. Here's an interesting article from a year ago which is even more relevant today: http://www.geeklawblog.com/2008/11/is-twittering-better-than-listservs.html

People coming to this Yahoo Group for information on HCPSS are probably a little disillusioned by the bickering and infighting. I suggest everyone take a deep breath, go to their respective corners, and start over. Just start a few Twitter conversations with the hashcode #HCPSS. You may be surprised how fast you develop a community.

Send me a tweet at bets60
                    Betsy

What part of censorship and lack of access to our schools are you having a problem with ? Why do you think the things you want to see in our schools are not there , not even discussed , you have no voice like the rest of us .

The actions of Glenelg's PTSA are not entirely in the best interest of the community and the behavior of it's administration warrants serious scrutiny .

Last year the students at Glenelg started a facebook group "I hate Mr. Tenure" (One of the teachers that parents have been complaining about for years and the sdministration lies to protect ) . Within one hour there were almost 100 members , all students .

Would have loved some sort of nonsense like Facebook to run her into the ground. Funny thing happened in my freshman English classes at the U of Ky - got B's. Huh, wonder if Mrs. Grigsby had anything to do with that?

Yo how about this - reach down and grab yo package and yell "I am a man" and name some names, places and dates. If you feel so strongly, you shouldn't mind a few law suits. After all it's for the children.

Yes we had this conversation befor , the insults and the rant about your tax dollars and educating other people's children and then you wandered off for a while . Then you returned with a few good ideas and now you are back to the demeaning posts .

I think I am goimg to the next PTA meeting at Glenelg . How about this Bob . I will bring all my documents , the lies in writing and you can go through them and we can discuss them in public . I am sure at least one of these people I am speaking of will be there amd lets see how pissed off they get , maybe they will even threaten to have me arrested again or have the HCPSS lawyer sue me . Hell Bob , maybe they will have us both locked up .

Would have loved some sort of nonsense like Facebook to run her into the ground. Funny thing happened in my freshman English classes at the U of Ky - got B's. Huh, wonder if Mrs. Grigsby had anything to do with that?

Last year the students at Glenelg started a facebook group "I hate Mr. Tenure" (One of the teachers that parents have been complaining about for years and the sdministration lies to protect ) .

I suggest everyone take a deep breath, go to their respective corners, and start over. Just start a few Twitter conversations with the hashcode #HCPSS. You may be surprised how fast you develop a community.
