      capacity of the 1N4001s, so the short answer is no, you can't just
      substitute LEDs for the diodes.

      What you can do, though, is drive LEDs from the same lines that drive your
      stepper. This is usually pretty easy, if you know what voltage to expect,
      what polarity it is, and what the current capacity is on each line.

      Can you point to a schematic on the web, perhaps? I can elaborate further
      if I can see what you are doing.
