vanilla is making an importance in linking up the Nairobi urban
youths and the rural youths through a social agricultural initiative.
Hands of love(H.O.L.S), an organization working with youths and
HIV/AIDS infected and affected persons from poor backgrounds
recently gave us an amazing account during one of our Project
management course field study.
It is an organisation in the heart of Kibera slums, running a number
of projects dependent on the funds from donors.
As one of their sustainability strategies, they have opted to extend
a collaborative arrangement with organisations in the rural areas.
In one such arrangement, they are planning to start a social
agricultural project with Nyeri farmers where the proceeds from the
produce would be shared in a percentage basis.
The major interest is the venture in planting vanilla (a new crop
introduced in Kenya).
Vanilla farmers in Nyeri rake profit as high as ksh 40,000 per
kilogramme of the dried beans.
This comes as a great opportunity that would provide a bridge
between the urban and rural poor striving towards sustainable
In my next entry i will explore more on this crop(vanilla), taking
particular interest on the Nyeri vanilla farmers, the problems they
face, their needs, and how the introduction of this crop is a boost
to food production and how the initiative diversify farming options.
