Dear Kenyans and friends of Kenya,

Last year, President Mwai Kibaki declared Eid al-Adha a national holiday in apparent recognition of the Muslim community’s contribution to nation building. At the end of Hajj, annual pilgrimage to Mecca, Muslims throughout world celebrate Eid al-Adha - a festival of sacrifice in remembrance of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

However, this year in Kenya Eid al- Adha will slide by unnoticed by the larger population or be quietly marked only among the Kenyan Muslims amidst their day to day work obligations. This while across the border the Tanzanians will hold two days celebrations, marked as public holidays today and tomorrow.

It is now obvious to all Kenyans that the pre-election pact of ODM leader, now Prime Minister, Raila Odinga to judiciously resolve Kenyan Muslims’ extradition under terror laws and Kibaki’s declaration of Eid al Adha a holiday were a political gimmick or Machiavellian move to net the Muslim vote. Did you see how they outdid each other in “Muslim-regalia-fashion-show” during election campaigns?  What has suddenly changed? Isn’t this an apt example of lack of ethical leadership?

      Kenyans, shall we ever learn?
