      GCAP Mobilization Plan 2008
      Now in their fourth year of mobilization, the Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) has prepared their 2008 plan for putting an end to poverty and inequality. This year GCAP will be building momentum over a 50-day period linked to key existing global events, concluding with a powerful three-day peak moment of mobilization around October 17th. Aiming to promote global, regional and national advocacy actions, the campaign is hopeful that organizations will engage actively in several of these actions. Read the Mobilization Plan for 2008 and learn more about GCAP.

      :: Introduction
      Dear friends,

      Since its founding, GYAN's work has always centered on the belief that young people have the power to change the world. Youth care deeply about critical issues facing our planet, and deserve to be recognized for the contributions they are making to their communities.

      GYAN and other like-minded organizations have been advocating for young people's right to have a voice in decisions that affect their lives, and we can't deny that some progress has been made. Yet, despite repeated government pledges to listen to youth and involve them in decision-making, the number of countries that follow through is still small; at the recently concluded 46th session of the United Nations Commission on Social Development only a handful of governments included youth representatives on their official delegations.

      It is not surprising, then, that the global youth movement is closely following the presidential election primaries in the United States. For the first time in history, the Democratic nominee may very well be decided by the youth vote. The world is witnessing the growth of a social movement, based on the ideals and dreams of young people, which is already sweeping far beyond the boundaries of the United States.

      Not only in the US, but in many countries, youth are tired of political leaders who have lost touch with the real needs of people and our planet. For them, whether they support the political ideas of Barack Obama or not, this campaign is indeed a beacon of hope that change is possible, and that their voices can and do matter.

      No matter the outcome of the US primaries and presidential election this year, recent events prove the importance of the work we are doing. GYAN will always believe in the power of young people, that change is possible, and that one day our efforts will reach the critical mass needed to build a more peaceful, just and sustainable world for all.

      In hope,

      Franziska Seel
      Executive Director
