Just thought I would try to get a jump on this year's ratings by taking
an poll. By this time people should be getting an idea of what teams
they would be comfortable rating. If you could let me know what teams
you think you would be able to rate this year, I'll compile the results
and maybe we can start to see where holes might be before the process is
underway. So drop me a line in the next week or so and I'll see where
things are. Also, let me know if there's anything that you feel could
help you in the ratings process. That will allow for some time for the
disk team to do whatever it can to help you out.

Also, I have a preliminary version of the scouting report done so if
you're interested, let me know and I can forward it to you. It includes:

      *All player profiles from McKeen's
*All player profiles from The Sports Forecaster
*Player profiles from five teams from Fantasy Sports Services
*Weekly updates from Fantasy Sports Services (each week they profile a
rookie, a breakthrough player and a player on the rise).

Dave Elkin has been helping me out with cutting and pasting profiles
from Fantasy Sports Service's website but I could always use more help
      with this.

I'm currently in the process of catching up on my Hockey News reading,
which should go better now with the annuals completed. Have 10 issues
read and marked, now it's just a matter of inputting the info.

I have never been involved in this process, but would love to be if you need

I am 53 years old and have been playing APBA computer hockey since 1991.
I have subscribed to NHL Center Ice, so I have access to 95%+ of all NHL
        games.
I live in the Los Angeles area so my greatest source of local info would
        include the
Kings and Ducks. Let me know what teams you need help with that no on
        usually
follows and I will take them.
I am currently not in any leagues but have been in the past. I ran the CAHA
        league
for a while when the commissioner became overloaded.

          Herb,

I would love to help out. Unfortunately I have a job that requires me to
travel and therefore I do not get to see many games, but I see different
teams all year. I would say that I would feel more comfortable rating the
Canadian Teams but more so Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. But I may be
able to add to that list before the year is out as I see regional games more
often than not. I would try to rate any team I had seen play 4 or more
times. Or if need be maybe less to assist if there is a low number of raters
          this year.

          Shawn

Otherwise, I can take a shot at some of their common opponents (which would
be the Western Division teams), though can't guarantee which of them I'd see
enough to make a good evaluation.

Can anyone forward the format or form that we should follow or use? It would be helpful if we all submitted out info in a standardized fashion.

Dave sends out a standard form at the end of the season with all the players that will be on the disk (Anyone with 12 GP or 6 GP for goalies). Right now I'm just getting an idea of how many people are interested in rating and what teams people will be able to rate. That way if we're short on any teams we can try to recruit some raters before the season ends.

A good article. A couple of things I hadn't thought of before.
However, I disagree with one point, that plus/minus favours defensive players. While the article makes good points about how offensive players can be affected, it totally ignores guys like Mike Ricci, Rod Brind'Amour and Mike Peca. These guys line up against the league's top offensive players (Lemieux, Jagr, Sakic etc) every night and play most of their minutes against them....therefore even though they are their teams' best defensive player, they rarely have the best plus/minus on the team. (Ricci was 11th on the Sharks last year; Brind'Amour 4th on the Canes; Peca was 2nd on the Isles).
Meanwhile a lot of rookies (Frolov) and weak defensive players usually don't go up against the other teams top lines and therefore get scored on less because they play most of their minutes against third and fourth liners..
Defensive specialists with limited offence also have more trouble building up pluses because they score infrequently but play against skilled offensive players.

                      Herb
