You can buy a PID temperature controller on ebay for less than $20.
The one I bought came with a type K thermocouple and reads out the
temperature in C.
Not hot enough for iron, but still would make a killer probe for cheap.
It will plug in to mains power, but could be hacked for battery use.
Add a stainless steel tube for a very cheap pyrometer.
