Threats Force TV Anchor Into Exile

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Death threats have forced another Colombian journalist into exile — this time the nation's most popular television anchorwoman, RCN station said Wednesday.

Claudia Gurisatti — who presents the evening news for RCN and hosts a popular interview show called ``The Night'' — left the country Tuesday for an indefinite period of time, Alvaro Garcia, RCN news director, told the Associated Press Wednesday.

``There was a plan against her life,'' Alvaro said. He wouldn't say where she had fled.

The 27-year-old Gurisatti learned of the latest death threat Sunday when authorities from the state prosecutor's office called to warn her of an assassination plan they had discovered, Alvaro said.

It wasn't immediately clear who wanted to kill her or why. The anchorwoman was already using an armored car and bodyguards because of anonymous threats received last year.

Gurisatti has quickly become one of Colombia's most recognized journalists. She has secured widely-watched interviews with leaders of the nation's warring factions and in September was featured on the cover of the popular newsmagazine Semana.

The 37-year armed conflict has made Colombia one of the world's most dangerous places for journalists. Last year, 12 were killed and another 32 forced into exile, according to the University of Sabana in the capital Bogota.
