The AFU & Urban Legends Archive

      Since 1991

      [Back to Urban Legend Zeitgeist]

      Synopsis

Scam artists con people into dialing "90#" thus allowing them to place calls at their victims expense.

      See a warning here.

      Is it true?

No in most cases, yes in a few.

Only users of certain types of telephone switching equipment (PBXs to be exact) are vulnerable to this scam. Furthermore, only users of improperly configured PBXs are vulnerable.

The vast majority of telephones, including residential telephones, are not affected by this scam.

      Why?

The scam has been around for a number of years. See the links below for confirmation of the scams.

      When?At least since 1995.
      Comments

Even though this is a very rare example of a forwarded email warning that has some grain of truth, in general, it is probably isn't a very good idea to pass along warnings circulating via email.
