The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques and groups in
solidarity with the struggle for peace on Vieques, denounced the cruel and
inhuman treatment received in US federal prisons by Jos Prez Gonzlez,
prisoner for the events of May First 2003 in Vieques. The organizations that
participated in a conference about Vieques held in Washington, DC last May,
include, among others: United Methodist Church; United Church of Christ,
American Friends Service Committee (Quakers), Fellowship of Reconciliation,
Pro Libertad in NY, National Boricua Human Rights Network, Military Toxics
Project, All Puerto Rico with Vieques Coordinator, Menonite Church,
Caribbean Project for Justice and Peace.

According to lawyers and family members, Jos has been in constant movement
from one jail to another, placed in solitary confinement on several
occasions and transferred without knowledge of legal representatives.

In telephone conversation with the prisoner's father from Florida, he
described how 'by the Grace of God' he found out his son had been
transferred from an Air Force Base facility in Montgomery, Alabama to the
Elmore County Jail in North Wetumpka, Alabama. Now, he has informed us, his
son is in the federal prison in Atlanta, Georgia.

Representatives of human rights, environmental, cultural, religious and
political groups in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Massachusetts,
California, Puerto Rico and other places, repudiate the way Federal Bureau
of Prisons personnel carry out an obvious process of political harassment
against Jos Prez. The Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques,
organizations in support of the Accused and Prisoners for May First 2003 in
Puerto Rico and the international groups will begin shortly a campaign of
letters and calls to government officials and media to guarantee respect for
the human rights of Jos Prez. Jose Perez Gonzalez has been moved to a
federal prison in Atlanta, Georgia. According to Jose, His conditions have
improved. He is currently in general population and doing well.

Please write to Jose Perez Gonzalez and Let him know that you are thinking
      of him.

      Jose Perez Gonzalez

      ALSO...

Judge Fuste has imprisoned another Vieques activist, Andy Santiago!! His
probation officer demanded that he meet additional conditions, which he
refused to accept. He has been incarcerated for the remainder of his
      sentence (December 2004).
