This is just what I heard and got to type during last class.  Hope it helps you all study.
It's not too organized and the spelling is likely off but it contains a lot of the movie.

      History 115
      5/10/06
      -         Five Handouts today: Start reading the Neoliberalism chart (now)
      -         Make sure you’ve read the readings on these 2 topics: “Neoliberalism, NAFTA, Globalization & the Remaking of North America.” And “Brokers, Bullets, and CNN: Zapatistas Rebel against NAFTA & Neoliberalism”
o       Have those readings done by Monday (today’s articles by Wednesday)
      -         Film: The 6th Sun: Mayan Uprising in Chiapas Journal Entry #8. Start reading those questions (now!)
Salinas- Globalize Mexico- pushed to open
“Harvard Educated” – called by the Economist

Neoliberalism- Notion of Washington Consensus- privatize, liquidated assets, restructured spending and household,
IMF & WTO- notion that they pushed Mexico to open up but in actuality Salinas led the way proposing his ideas to the first Bush.  During this time period Mexico is not a democracy.  Villagers against corrupt, authoritarian view.  Salinas says it’s necessary – but what happened to Gorbechov?  Exile—in San Francisco .  Salinas thought Mexico should be like the Chinese to be in rank of the first world (and that they can’t do so politically)
Greenspan – “road to the market is a valley of tears.”
Slash spending on subsidies (like corn)--- leads to native rebellion.
IMF argues—bitter medicine.  Massive unemployment, poverty, infant/child mortality increases.  (60 years thrown away.)
Cartoon- boss says “I’m going to modernize you.”  Worker says “to break your mother/ to get messed up/fucked up.” What are the costs and pain of modernization?
1980’s in all of LA called the Lost Decade.
Salinas needed to change the definition of what nationalism is.  (It’s so ingrained…)
People rewrite history for their own means.  Salinas had textbooks rewritten. Previously said foreign investment was a greedy octopi sucking out all the wealth and leaving nothing left.  Salinas says Diaz was rigid in politics but that there was economic growth – railroads, etc.  New version calls Zapata a ‘rebel without a cause.’

Mexico receives the most foreign investment and becomes a major exporter.
Mexico also leads the way in terms of a violent response to market-opening policy.
Nescafe- says Mexico has ‘guerillas in its closet.’
      After 1995 Salinas in exile.
