Drextal Brumfield entered into eternal rest on December 20, 2010 at age 46. He was a native of New Orleans, LA. Son of Murray and the late Willie Jean Brumfield. Loving brother of Julia (Jeffrey) Vappie, Robert (Sharon) Brumfield, Gwen Sedillo, the late Mark Brumfield, Tammy (Larry) Clark, Derek Brumfield, Damon (Alisha) Brumfield, and Patrick (Sandy) Brumfield. Uncle of 27 nieces & nephews and 20 great nieces & nephews, and a host of other relatives & friends. He was educated in the N.O. Public School System and attended LSU & Loyola Universities.
Drex was unique for his constant drive to do positive things for his community, be that for his beloved Historic Tremé or be that a group of people he worked with on a specific project. He volunteered tirelessly on many committees and boards, but none so much as for the Bi-Centennial celebration of the Tremé. He also volunteered for many years for the Jazz Centennial Celebration, the St. Augustine Church and the Satchmo SummerFest Jazz Mass, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, North Rampart Main Street, The French Market Corporation, and Prospect 1, just to name a few.
He worked very closely with the New Orleans Musician’s Clinic, to help bring awareness to the great New Orleans musicians, whom he loved as his own. He was admired for his tireless efforts of trying to make a better world and having fun along the way. It was his lust for life that got him this far, much farther than any normal person could have survived with so many physical problems. His presence is already missed in New Orleans, by his family, friends and extended family, where all benefited so much from his efforts.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at St. Augustine Church, 1210 Gov. Nicholls St., N.O., LA 70116, on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 11:00am Interment will be at St. Louis #1, followed by a repass at the St. Augustine Church Hall.
