Some months ago, Public Works provided design plans for use of CDBG funding for streetscape improvements on N. Claiborne Ave. from Esplanade to St. Anthony ($300,000), and on St. Bernard Avenue from North Claiborne to N. Miro ($600,000). The plans as seen in the attachment called for removal of seating around columns under the I-10 expressway, sidewalk repair, and the placement of Crape Myrtles trees in existing curb cutouts. Residents from surrounding areas were allowed to comment on these plans.  Of the residents that attended, many expressed that those areas needed better lighting instead of planned improvements. Based on this input,  it appears that Public Works has decided to use all funding to make lighting changes instead of their originally proposed plans.  See message below.

    Dear Ms Knox:

Thank you for your inquiry of the Claiborne/St Bernard streetscape project.  Based upon the comments received from the community meeting , lighting was deemed a priority for the area and the project is now a lighting project.  The plans for sidewalk improvement, trees etc. will be delayed until additional funding can be identified.  Since the second community meeting, a topographic and right of way survey was completed along with preliminary designs.  The city is working with the various utility companies to ensure that the new lighting including the underground wiring does not interfere with the existing utilities i.e. water and gas lines.  Construction for this project should began in the summer of this year.  Please let me know if I could be of further assistance to you.

    Sincerely,

    Valerie Moten

    Mr. Mendoza,

Several months ago your team demonstrated design plans for the Claiborne Avenue/ St. Bernard  Avenue streetscape project.  When will this project began?  Have the plans changed?

    Sincerely,
    Jessica D. Knox
