I am newbie with Hercules and I am trying to use the ICKSADSF.R16.BIN to format a DASD with Hercules with no success. I am not sure if I should use a card reader, tape or something different and how should be the line in the CNF file.

      I appreciate any tip.

      Thanks in advance,

Assuming that you have the file in the standalone/ folder:

        dasdinit the.new.disk.file 3390-3 volser
        Start hercules
        archmode esa/390
        attach 123 3390 dasd/the.new.disk.file
        devinit 000c standalone/ICKSADSF.R16.bin
        IPL 000C
        connect a TN3270 crt
clear the CRT if ICKSADSF didn't see it yet.

I hope I got most details that you need.

You ve got a lot of parms I don t use, but right off the bat, the device type needs to be a 2501 instead of 3505. Also, we use NUMCPU 1. Scott

your explanation is simple and clear and I did something similar a long time ago
using Hercules 3.0.6 with no problem.

You can see the messages after start hercules, the DASD is already attached
the device initialization it's OK, after ipl I get an exception.

Yes, I tried NUMCPU 4 with no error.

Probably something obvious but I don't see it.

You could specify ebcdic on the card reader or copy
the card images to a tape as Fx80x80 unblocked.

The one that I posted is the one that I used:

                          http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/hercules-os380/message/6618

If you can't get this resolved, I could create and E-Mail
a disk image that you could copy and clip to make hundreds.

Hercules' dasdload will create and also initialize disk
                          volume images.
