        Hi Joanna,

In English, the Lectures are available in a two volume set translated by T M Knox, with an earlier edition by the idealist Bernard Bosanquet (or at least introduced by him). Bosanquet also wrote a history of Aesthetics, which I think had mixed reviews in its day.

Croce's What is Living and What is Dead in the Philosophy of Hegel (1900) and Aesthetics are (or were) available in English, though being Romanian you might prefer to read them in the Italian original. R G Collingwood's The Principles of Art is a very good English book from the 1930s by someone influenced by Croce.

I don't keep up to date, so I really don't know modern work on Hegel's Aesthetics, though I daresay there is some, as so much is written about Hegel.

        I hope this helps.

        All the best
        Stephen Cowley

The authority (I mean: /the/ authority) on Hegel's aesthetics in
Germany is Annemarie Gethmann-Siefert. If you happen to understand
German -- or if it happens to be translated -- the obvious
              recommendation would be

Annemarie Gethmann-Siefert: Einfuehrung in Hegels Aesthetik,
              Muenchen (UTB): 2005

If you intend to go deeper (maybe more than what is necessary for a
Bachelor), then some of the writings of Christoph Mengke, Albrecht
Wellmer, and, of course, of Adorno would be interesting. Also, I seem
to remember an interesting paper by Pippin arguing that Hegel's
aesthetics was already conceptually prepared for abstract paintings
(or modern art in general), but I do not recall any details. (If you
want to go even deeper, then the writings of some artists might be
interesting. The composer Helmut Lachenmann -- one of the very big
names in contemporary Western European music -- shows, probably
because he's influenced (though not brainwashed) by Lukacz and Adorno,
a Hegelian influence in his writings on what he is doing as a
composer. This makes his writings very accessible for aesthetical
reflexion in the tradition of Hegel.)

Unfortunately there's a problem with the lectures on the philosophy of
art as published by Hotho, which is presumably the only edition
available in any other language than German. This edition is not only
edited, but actually corrupted. Gethmann-Siefert does not tire to put
an emphasis on that. To some extent this is true for all published
lectures, but for the lectures on aesthetics the case seems to be
particularly desastrous. They tell you more about the aesthetical
views of Hotho than of Hegel. There is a critical edition, though, but
I do not know whether a translation is available.

A propos Hegel's aethetics: once in a while one stumbles over little
surprises that cause a very small, but bright joy. I decided recently
to re-read Joyce' Ulisses, and this time I want to read it in the
original language, hoping that my understanding is good enough (I
doubt it, but I am bold). So I bought the Penguin Classics paperback
edition of "Ulisses". And this is the first sentence of the
                advertising text on the back:

"For Joyce, literature is 'the eternal affirmation of the spirit of
                man'."

If somebody knows the origin of that quote, I'd be glad to learn it.
Or maybe I will find it out myself when I find the time to read the
                introductiory text.

A propos absolute spirit: @Bob Wallace:
Bob, I have not forgotten our discussion on absolute spirit; live is
keeping me currently on my toes, though. The matter requires a delian
diver. And right know I won't find the leisure even to read my beloved
                Ulisses. :-(

                    Hello Joanna,

It's good to hear from a Rumanian student of philosophy, and of Hegel
in particular. I hope that your country is having success in its
opening to the outside world, and that your studies will lead you to
wonderful things. Welcome to the hegel list!

There is a volume called _Hegel and Aesthetics_, edited by William
Maker (Albany, New York: SUNY Press, 2000). It contains papers by
twelve of the leading American writers about Hegel's aesthetics.

William Desmond, _Art and the Absolute: A Study of Hegel's
                    Aesthetics_ (SUNY Press, 1986).
