- Nov 19, 2009Yes but then well if they are outdated in this automatic way then Hegel will be even more so, or if not why not? Conversely, that Houlgate or anyone else cast their works in the form of commentary or exposition does not preclude that they may be making an original contribution, good for a hundred years or more. Just a thought. Stephen

Subject: [hegel] Re: Hegel Logic - Stephen Houlgate "The Opening Of Hegel's Logic"

Yes, I agree that this book is also excelent. It only covers the first 1/9 of the Science of Logic, from pure being to Being-For-Itself (Fuersichsein), but in this field it is very detailed and mastering this first 1/9 of the logic is very useful for the rest of the logic.

Stephen Houlgate knows German very well (when I hear him speak in German about Hegel, I would not know that he is no native speaker) and his comments are very detailed.
Contrary to Carlson, who seems to only comment the english literature, Houlgate also knows the German literature, even of the last years.
(As the understanding of Hegel's Science of Logic has made such great progress within the last 15 years, I think that any literature not taking into acount this new literature, e.g. when published before say 1990, is outdated).
Houlgates book is divided in three parts: the first part discusses some basic concepts, the second part consists of the original Hegel text noth in German as well as in a translation by Stephen Houlgate,
the last part consists of a detailed comment of the text.
The comment also discusses and criticises positions popular in the secondary literature, what may be a bit too much for the beginner, however I find it very helpful to see explicit how an interpretation distinguishes itself from others.
So I can recomend this book as an addition to the other books on my list to anyone seriously interested in english literature on the Hegel's Science of Logic.
All the best
Kai
