I didn't know Arthur Berriedale Keith was a translator of the Rigveda.  He's most well known in India as the author of A Constitutional History of India - 1600-1935.

      We agree to differ.

      Srivats,

The edition of the RigVeda Brahmanas that I read is from the Harvard Oriental Series, volume 25.   The translator was Arthur Berriedale Keith, who translated the original Sanskrit into English in 1920.

I respectfully double-down on my view that sacrifice, oblation, penance, austerity and self-denial share a very intimate relation to both Eucharistic and Christian monasticism.

By the way, Wikipedia defines the Sanskrit word, Prayaschitta as: "atonement, penance, expiation."  That reminds me of Christian Religion in a fundamental way, and is so many centuries older than Christianity that we should measure it in thousands of years.

      All best,
      --Paul

      Paul,

I am impressed that you have read the Rigveda. I've been wanting to attempt it. Apparently about a 100 scholars have translated it so far. Do you have any insights into whose translation would be good?

Sacrifice, oblation, penance, austerity, self-denial. These terms have a very different feel from Eucharistic practice and Christian monasticism.

See e.g. the Wikipedia entry on Praayaschitta, the term usually translated as penance. It has a really wide range of meanings - related to the Veda, i.e., the following of holy texts.
