- Dec 4, 2018Srivats,The process by which the Perceptual Consciousness moves from a status of Object-Unity-and-Subject-Diversity to the status of Object-Diversity-and-Subject-Unity is the process of motion itself -- namely -- the dialectical negative.Hegel finds this dialectical negative in the phenomena of Physics, in matter, in Geology, in chemistry, in botany, in biology and then in human life and what Hegel calls the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807).It is the story of the Evolution of Consciousness from primitive forms of Consciousness to more complex Forms. It is written in three parts: Individual, Political and Spiritual. The dialectical negative is the motor impulse that keeps moving this Evolution forward (despite occasional backslides). For this specific section (within the part on Individual Consciousness), Hegel evokes the dialectical negative to move from Object-Unity-and-Subject-Diversity to the status of Object-Diversity-and-Subject-Unity.It is a logical deduction that arises as a result of the Evolution of Consciousness. Perceptual Consciousness evolves from primitive Sense-certain Consciousness, for which Everything on the planet is a simple "This". It is all "One" in that primitive sense. The differences between the Objects at this Sense-certain stage appear to be only differences in the Mind of the Subject.Yet the Perceptual Consciousness is able to perceive that individual Objects are Things-in-themselves, with specific properties, substances, textures, durabilities, shapes, sizes, colors, tastes, odors -- even different sounds.Once Perceptual Consciousness grasps the idea that the world is composed of trillions of Things, then it can become clear that the Subjective Mind is One -- and it is the World that is so diverse. This is the dawn of the next stage of Spiritual Evolution -- a discovery of the Transcendental Apperception -- the Unity of the Subject. There's my take on it.All best,--Paul---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More generally on perception. Between 118 and 123, there is a process by which the perceptive consciousness moves from attributing the unity in the object and the diversity in the perceiving subject, to the diversity in the object (and unity in the perceiving subject). It is possible for us as readers if Hegel to see this movement, but it is unclear why the perceptive consciousness will make that transition. Is this simple oscillation or is it a logical deduction? If the latter, what's the logic that puts the diversity in the object?ThanksSrivats - << Previous post in topic Next post in topic >>
