Group Description

This e-group is intended to be a forum within which interested folks can enter into a dialogue to explore community. We want to create and live in a new paradigm. We want to collectively envision a new way of operating in our work life and community life that expresses our deepest values. We want to cooperate to accomplish something that none of us can do alone. We will no longer wait around for our governments or our corporations or our social organizations or our scientists to do it for us. The time is now.

With this in mind, several people created a nonprofit organization in 1998 and received a 501 c (3) designation from the IRS. We worked on several projects over a few years, and eventually the organization was put into corporate limbo and has remained inactive essentially since September 11, 2001 when the nonprofit funding world came to a standstill and projects were shelved until the crisis in New York was addressed.

Recently, a few people thought it might be time to take Heartland out of the mothballs and make it useful again. The 501c(3) is still viable, and the corporation can be reactivated with a little paperwork and about a hundred dollars. The organizational purposes, which can be read on this site, are about cooperation and sustainable living. The founders intended to work toward an intentional community / eco village, and to practice right livelihood. Just about any project that promotes sustainability in any way could be done under the auspices of the organization. It is set up to spin off other for-profit and non-profit ventures that are worker-owned. What we do with it at this point is wide open. So start dreaming!
