The other reason to use tube webbing or nylon straps is because any small diameter cord will dig into the tree that you are hanging your hammock from. This can result in damage to the tree and for this reason hammock camping has been banned for some large organizations in some areas. Be kind to the trees. I use the tubular webbing that you can find at any outdoor store with a rock climbing section. It stretches very little and can hold an elephant. It is also relatively cheap 15-25 cents per foot. Never leave it tied in knots after you use it thought or you could weaken the webbing over time in addition to almost never being able to get the knots out.
