- Or just head out into the national forests or BLM land and do your
thing. NM has millions of acres of public land that, as long as
you're not a jerk, you can just go out and enjoy. Northern NM has a
lot of beautiful and spectacular country, but it gets a lot more
human pressure than southern NM. Down there the main attraction is
the Gila country. That's where the nation's first wilderness area
was created. Huge, wild, and mostly empty. Don't go there unless you
and your vehicle are in good shape. Civilization (hospitals, car
repair places, Walmart, etc) is a long way away.
Google Gila National Forest. Check this site out for more of the
local culture and such.
