      Either you do it stealthily or you bring a stand. If you are with someone that s using a tent you could set the tent up and act like you are using it.

        Either you do it "stealthily" or you bring a stand. If you are with
        someone that's using a tent you could set the tent up and act like you
        are using it. Later after dark put your hammock up and take it down
        first thing in the morning.

        I don't think it's against the law, just against the rules and policies.
        Of course, I'm no lawyer and you'll have to make that call yourself.

          State park rules often come under departmental regulations and may well be chargeable misdemeanors. I know this is the case in Virginia, so I would suggest researching the regulations of the specific park(s) first...know when you are breaking a rule, regulation, or law.

            I used it as a test for pitching the hammock on the ground as if I were
            above tree line or something. If there were no bugs I would have just
            foregone the hammock and slept under the tarp. But it was Florida and the
            noseeums were vicisious that night. So I pitched my Hennessy under the tarp
            to use as a bug shelter. Yes, I was sleeping on a pad on the ground, and no,
            I wasn't as comfortable as I would have been in the air, but it was a legal
            camp.
