There isn't a "save [to] disk" icon in my layout, but there are a row of
tabs. I don't believe this is functioning correctly, as there isn't a
PSK-31 icon unless you count the superbrowser and that does not seem to
change the frequency. Actually, that is very confusing. You can have the
mode as RTTY and the superbrowser decodes PSK-31. Also you can have
multiple tabs above indicating BPSK.
Then the lower section where all the modes are listed doesn't do anything
and isn't supposed to do anything? (this is the main question) I guess what
confuses me is that this section exists and can be clicked on. Under
certain circumstances you can change modes, but under others, you cannot.
Shouldn't it disappear if it doesn't do anything (other than indicate the
mode you're in)? That's an awful lot of real estate.

Each active mode you have is a tab in DM780's window which shows the
specific mode you are in. Just under the top tab portion and to the left of
the Save (disk) icon it shows the same mode and that is where you can change
the mode. Click that drop-down and select the mode you want.
You can also click the QSO menu and select Mode in that menu and it will
open a sidebar with modes in it and you can select there.
Hope that helps a bit.
