Both foundations agreed to support the Transatlantic Community
Foundation Network (TCFN) for another three-year period.
The TCFN, which was established in 1999 by the Bertelsmann
Foundation with support and advice of the C. S. Mott Foundation,
provides a platform for the exchange of experience and expertise
among community foundations on both sides of the Atlantic. The
network seeks to identify good practice and share them with
emerging and existing community foundations. In addition, its goal is
to foster the development of this form of philanthropy in countries
where the concept is still new.
As the TCFN moves into its second phase of operation, it has
integrated 12 new members. The network now includes
representatives of 46 community foundations and support
organizations from 14 different countries. Their institutions span the
spectrum of development from relatively new entities to foundations
that have logged many years of service to their communities. The
members of the TCFN will focus their efforts upon three broad
functional areas: community leadership, marketing as well as
      organizational development and effectiveness.
“During the past decade the Community Foundation concept has
spread rapidly around the globe”, says Peter Walkenhorst, Program
Director at the Bertelsmann Foundation. “Although first invented in
the US, community foundations are no longer a uniquely American
concept, but have developed into a truly international model, which
provides the framework for the development of community-based
philanthropy in many countries around the world.”
