      Dear Colleagues

Request for Expression of Interest for a Resource person/Trainer for 2nd Groundwater Modeling Program- Sri Lanka

1st Groundwater modeling program was held in August 2011 with the participation of an Indian consultant with of great success. We are currently organizing the 2nd program to be held from 20th to 24th August 2012.

      Program background
This program is organized by the component 2 of the Dam Safety and Water Resources Planning project(damsafety.lk) implemented by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources Management of Sri Lanka. Component-2 has two sub components: 1) Improvement of hydro meteorological information system (HIMS) and 2) Establishment of Groundwater Monitoring network in Sri Lanka.

The establishment of Groundwater monitoring network has been entrusted to hydrogeologists working in the Water Resources Board (WRB) of Sri Lanka under the supervision of a consultant. In parallel to this activity, a program of capacity building is underway to strengthen the technical capability of WRB to meet the future challenges in the field of groundwater sector. As a part of it, three training schedules on development of Groundwater models for Sri Lanka have been programmed of which the first program was completed in July 2011. The 2nd program will be mainly concentrated on development of groundwater flow models whereas Model development of Solute transport and Saltwater intrusion will be done during the 3rd training program that will probably come by the end of 2012.

Course content of Groundwater flow modeling:
      ·         Introduction to groundwater modeling
      ·         Conceptual model: conceptualization of aquifer-aquitard systems; specification of boundary conditions; hydrological stresses
      ·         Design of numerical model: finite-difference solutions of flow problems; steady versus unsteady model; one layer versus multi-layer model; lay-out of grids; stress period/time steps.
      ·         Model inputs: initial conditions; boundary conditions; hydrogeological parameters; hydrological stresses
      ·         Model calibration and validation: selection of model code; calibration procedures
      ·         Model prediction: purpose of prediction; simulation of scenarios; determination of capture zones
      ·         Application of  PMWIN
      ·         Application of MODFLOW
      ·         Exercises and case studies
We intend to spend more time on case studies and exercises confining theory only to two days of the course duration.

      Program Schedule
The program has been scheduled from 20 to 24th August 2012 but the selected person has to be in Sri Lanka from 16 to 25th August both days inclusive. Trainer’s program is as follows:
      15th Arrival in Sri Lanka
16 and 17th –Preparation for the program such as meetings with officials and discussions related to the program.
      18 and 19th - Weekend
      20 to 24th –Training program
      Package
The Trainer will be provided with free economy class air passage, full board hotel facilities, and transport from hotel to the place of training program which will be conducted in Colombo and He/She should have a good record in conducting training programs in Groundwater modeling with high degree of presentation skills in English language
      General information
There will be about 3o participants consisting of hydrogeologists and engineers who have a good proficiency in English language.
If you are interested please send your financial offer together with your updated CV before 12 July 2012 in order to get approvals from the Project Management Unit (PMU) to proceed with the rest of the formalities.
