A hands-on course: Water Flow and Solute Transport in the Unsaturated Zone
- A hands-on course:
Water Flow and Solute Transport in the Unsaturated Zone
The course Water Flow and Solute Transport in the Unsaturated Zone is
being held in the UK for the first time since 2002. It will be presented by
Drs Rien van Genuchten and Jirka Simunek of the US Salinity Laboratories and
University of California. Dr van Genuchten is well-known for his major
contributions to our understanding of the unsaturated zone, including his
Flow and transport in the unsaturated zone is a key feature in most
contaminated land and landfill risk assessments and is an important focus
for understanding the fate of diffuse pollution in the environment. However,
it is not covered in sufficient detail in many university courses for some
of the applications that are required in todays environmental industry.
This course is an excellent (and rare) opportunity for risk assessors,
hydrogeologists and soil scientists to develop their understanding about how
water and contaminants move in the unsaturated zone.
The lectures on theory and application will be balanced with hands-on
computer sessions to provide participants with an opportunity to become
familiar with the relevant software packages for modelling unsaturated zone
The course will be held over 27-29 March in Shrewsbury, UK. Further details
of this and other regular environmental modelling and risk assessment
training courses held by ESI can be obtained at
ng/training.asp> (follow link to Hydrus), or by calling Lesley Annison-Clark
on 01743 276100.
Course places are limited and, as this is a rare opportunity to benefit from
hearing first hand from researchers at the leading edge of the science, you
are recommended to book early.
