Re: [guyanese_genealogy] Henry Smith (1841)
- Henry Smith was a mariner and (apparently) he died at sea off St Lucia in 1896.I have a copy of the 1861 census which shows him living as a boarder in Liverpool. The 1871 and 1881 census' show him living in London with his wife, Ann, and their3 children. I have a copy of Henry and Ann's wedding certificate which shows Henry'sfather as a Clark Smith, but I have no idea where Clark originated from and why hewent to Guyana.

When you find out anything, I'd love to know. My ancestors, William and Sarah Turner, also left Guyana for New York around that same year, having lived about a decade in Guyana after coming there from Great Britain. His father was an upholsterer in London, and there is speculation they went to Guyana to oversee the woodpicking. But why did they go to New York rather than back to Britain?Do you know anything about your ancestor's occupation? That might give you some clues. --Joanne

Date: Thursday, August 13, 2009, 12:04 PMI am researching my husband's family tree and in particular the Smith family.
Henry Smith was born in Guyana in (1841) as were his 3 siblings - Benjamin (1838), William (1838), and Mary (1842). They, along with their mother, Henrietta, left Guyana in 1845 and sailed on the mv Mediator to New York (I have found a copy of the record of the voyage). On that document it states the "country to which they severally belong" as being Great Britain. I am assuming therefore that Henrietta must have left Great Britain with her then husband(?) to live in Guyana. However, her husband is not with her when she and the children left Guyana bound for New York.
I would love to be able to find out when and why Henrietta and her husband left Great Britain and from which port and also copies of records of birth for the children and a copy of the death record for Henrietta's husband.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
