      The Scene
      Sol Raye dies
      By John Mair in London
      Saturday, April 1st 2006

Guyanese singing legend Sol Raye died yesterday afternoon in the Royal
Marsden Hospital in London at just after 2 pm BST. He had been fighting
      prostate cancer for several years.

He was returned to the hospital 11 days ago just two weeks after discharge
from his previous visit. He was earlier this week given just two weeks to
      live.

Raye (real name Deryck Marshall Corbin) was the older brother of Guyana's
PNCR Leader Robert Corbin, who left Guyana for London yesterday to join his
sister Tessa Carter and the rest of the family.

The funeral is expected to take place next Wednesday, April 5, at Kensal
Green Crematorium close by Sol's West London Home.

Raye, a true Guyanese icon, sang beautifully and entertained audiences on
both sides of the Atlantic for nearly four decades. He looked like Nat
'King' Cole and he also sang like him.

Sol Raye emigrated to the UK four decades ago and lived in London. He served
his time in menial jobs like paint spraying until making his career in
      show-business.

Sol was a much liked and respected figure in the UK Diaspora making regular
appearances such as at the flood relief concert in February 2005. This
February he was hospitalised and unable to either perform or to collect his
well deserved Guyana High Commission (UK) Award.
