      Andrew,

A reconstruction something like “The Plain/True words which the living Jesus spoke” just doesn’t have the same pizzaz, IMHO.

However, “True” might be coupled with “Living” to contrast with the “revealed” high Christology of the Pauline epistles, Hebrews and implied in the Gospels.

The Coptic version of the Gospel of Thomas refers to "the secret words which the living Jesus spoke"
This passage is found in Greek in P. Oxy.654 but with lacunae.
In particular the adjective modifying "the...words" has been entirely lost. (Grenfell and Hunt suggested "marvellous" but this was a sheer guess.)

Modern editors restore "secret" or hidden" on the basis of the Coptic but I'm not sure they are correct. Possibly "secret" replaced a less esoteric term as part of a process in which the Coptic Thomas became more "Gnostic" than its Greek original.
