The Coptic version of the Gospel of Thomas refers
to "the secret words which the living Jesus spoke"
This passage is found in Greek in P. Oxy.654 but

has been entirely lost. (Grenfell and Hunt suggested "marvellous" but this was a
Modern editors restore "secret" or hidden" on the
basis of the Coptic but I'm not sure they are correct. Possibly "secret"
replaced a less esoteric term as part of a process in which the Coptic Thomas
became more "Gnostic" than its Greek original.
