      Hello Jenny,

Neef can be translated as either nephew or cousin. My guess is that in this instance it would be cousin. I believe you are looking for Geerdt Wassens, batpized 19.3.1673 in Veendam, and married 12.11.1699 in Veendam with Trijne Harms. They have 3 children in the records: Jantien (1700), Wasse (1704), and Fennichien (1705). Geerdt has a sister Femmichjen Warses baptized 3.3.1676 in Veendam. Their parents are Warse Geerdts & Janneken Geerts, but no marriage record. Likely they married elsewhere and moved into Veendam, and also that one of them is a sibling of the Harmen Geerts Vespers you mentioned, thus making Geert Wassens & Fenne Harms cousins. Also Harmen Geerts & Aeltjen Egberts marriage is not found, so likely they married elsewhere and the baptism you seek for Fenne was there too. At the 2nd marriage of harmen, it says he was of Noordhorn, so that may be where the records you seek would have been, and maybe are. The records for
the Noordhorn Groningen province church begin 1667, but I think there are other Noordhorn's that this family may be from.

      Greetings,
      Robb.

Subject: [groningen-genealogy] Baptism and mother of Fennichjen Harms

      Hello --
Looking for any record of the baptism of my ancestor, Fennichjen Harms. From a contract in Veendam, it appears that she is the daughter of Harmen Geerts:

Voorts staedt Fenne Harmens aen haere stiefmoeder ende halfsuster toe alle in- ende uitschulden, huis en landt nevens den ganschen inboedel. Eltie Simens betaalt aan Fenne Harmens 100 rijksdaalders. Getuigen: Arent Jacobs van Watum en Onno Brongers.

Harmen Geerts (Herman Geerts Vespers, Herman Gerrits, Herman Geerdts) was married 3 times:
      1) Aeltjen Egberts married by 16 Feb 1676 -- she is probably the mother of Fennechjen.
Children: Egbert 1670, Geeske Vespers 1673
      2) Hillicke Wilckes 18 Jun 1676 Veendam
      3) Eltie Siimons between 1681 and 23 Mar 1686

The following contract shows that Herman and Aeltien were married by 1667:
      - fol.46v - 17 februari 1667 - De erfgenamen van wijlen Wijpko Tiackes en Eemcke (gew.ehel.) verkopen aan Harmen Geerts en Aeltien (ehel.) een behuizing te Zuidbroek aan de straat o p de grond van vrouw Aldringa. Huur: 2 daler. Tevens 6 daler als 3-jarige huur. Prijs: n.v. Getuigen: mr. Joest Hulsebus en Lambert Jans. [Er wordt getekend door: Tiacko Wijpkes [merk], Teetie Wijpkes [merk], Eelste Wijpkes [merk], Hermen Frecks, Menne Frecks, Harmen Meertens, Albert Pieters, sibbevoogd, Harmen Jans, vreemde voogd.]

Fennechjen Harms and Hindrik Jans were married 2 years after her father's death:
      - fol.15v - 3 februari 1695 - H.V.
Hindrick Jans [=Hendrijck Jans], van Sappemeer, Fenne Harmens [=Fennije Harmens], van Veendam. Brg.: Jan Peters, vader; Br.: Geert Wassens [merk], neef; Getuigen: Aerent Jacobs van Watum en Jacob Jans.

Assuming that Fennechjen was about 25 years old at the time of her marriage, her birth would have been about 1670, so that would place her as a child of Aeltien Egberts, but I can't find any birth/baptism record for her, nor a marriage record for her parents.

Looking at her marriage record, the bride's side is Geert Wassens, neef. Would this be her "nephew"? If not, what relation? So far I can't find a relationship to her and I think that this would help.

Any help would be most appreciated!

      Jenny
