      Media Release: 24 April 2009

Bike and Kite Festival comes to Blackheath, London

On Saturday and Sunday 13th-14th June, between 12pm and 7pm, Blackheath, in south east London , will come alive with bikes and kites of all shapes and sizes as the second Blackheath Bike and Kite Festival gets underway.

This free weekend-long event has been organised by Festival Special Events, on behalf of Lewisham Council. Sponsored by Transport for London , the event coincides with the start of National Bike Week, and promises to be an entertaining weekend for the whole family.

Last year the event attracted around 15,000 visitors, with many more expected to attend this year.

A provisional schedule for the weekend includes:

        • Renowned mountain bike stunt team, MAD, will demonstrate gravity defying leaps, jumps, hops and balancing skills using only their custom made bikes. Children can get in on the act with special interactive in-between show ‘skill sessions’, where they can learn tips and tricks to help them perform their own bike stunts
        • For the first time, there will be special International Kite Fighting displays, with teams from around the world taking part
        • Guided bike rides to the O2, Surrey Docks City Farm and the 2012 Olympic site
        • Dual-line kite duets and precision kite ballet performances by professional teams from across Europe throughout the weekend
        • Cycling activities for young people including slaloms, slow races and limbos
        • Vintage bikes dating from the 1800s, with riders in period dress
        • Tutorial sessions and hints and tricks on how to make kite flying easier
        • ‘Try before you buy’ a range of bikes with Get Cycling
        • Kite-making workshops for all ages
        • Enjoy a showcase of local sports talent, events and activities available in Lewisham, to get people thinking about what they can do in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics. Age no limit!

Experts from Dr Bike will be on hand to offer advice and help on how to keep your bike in top condition.

There will be range of stalls selling bikes, kites, arts and crafts, different foods as well as a licensed bar.

There are no parking facilities on Blackheath. Visitors should plan their journey using the Transport for London journey planner at www.tfl.gov.uk . Or come on your bike!
