School Run: photographs taken on the way to school

      Kelly Hill and Jonathan Illingworth

We all walk the same journeys every morning, but the Viewfinder
Photography Gallery in Greenwich is showcasing how our repetitive routes
can throw up beauty and intrigue every day.

'School Run', which runs from 5 to 14 June, exhibits two photographers:
Kelly Hill and Jonathan Illingworth. Both have taken pictures on the
only time of day they find available - the walk to drop off their children.

Hill's ongoing project involves taking a picture every day for a year
(bar school holidays) and posting new shots daily on her blog until
January 2010 – continuing while the exhibition's on and beyond. Hill's
photographs tend to be delicate and mysterious; Illingworth's, in
contrast, taken on his walks through Plumstead Wood, southeast London,
are often darker and more macabre, and taken more spontaneously.

A workshop on 14 June, running alongside the exhibition, challenges
participants to take photographs along the same route as each other.
Participants can choose to walk through either historic Greenwich or
Deptford Creek, looking out for environment triumph - or tragedy. This
workshop option is part of Love London, a city-wide festival promoting
sustainability in the capital. The workshop is open to all levels, and
costs £5 each (but is free to Viewfinder members) and can be booked at

Viewfinder curator Louise Forrester said: "A lot of photographers are
setting themselves the challenge of taking a picture every day, but
Kelly Hill has made the challenge even more specific in focusing on the
school run. Jonathan Illingworth's approach is more one of chance, with
equally startling results. This exciting exhibition is testament that
what you see every day can always be interesting, and that a local
environment can differ greatly from day to day."

      Kelly Hill (http://schoolrun09.blogspot.com
<http://schoolrun09.blogspot.com>) has been featured in two previous
shows at the Viewfinder: Nearly Nothing and 24:2009. She is also a
      Viewfinder member.

Jonathan Illingworth is a member of London Independent Photography and
first showed his project informally at the Viewfinder where the
      Greenwich Satellite Group meets monthly.
