Greenwich Cyclists understands that the Charlton and Woolwich Planning
Committee of Greenwich Council approved a new section of cycle route
along Pear Tree Lane, Fearon Street and Aldeburgh Street in East
Greenwich at its meeting on 8 June 2000. This was due to pressure from
greenwich Cyclists, and represents our first success in developing cycle
      routes in Greenwich.

The route runs from the Thames riverside route next to the Greenwich
yacht Club, along Pear Tree Lane, past the new Sainsbury's on Greenwich
Peninsula. A contraflow lane will riun along Fearon and Aldeburgh
Street which will become one way for motor traffic.

The scheme was featured in a recent article in the News Shopper. A
number of residents of Fearon Street resisted the plans arguing that the
scheme would be dangerous to cyclists and disrupt their use of the
Streets. Greenwich Cyclists produced a report for the committee
supporting the scheme, but requesting that further consideration be
given to traffic calming measures in the contraflow part of the route.
We understand that Greenwich Cyclists input into the debate was
important in pursuading the committee to approve the route.

This route is an important part of the London Cycle Network and will be
useful to cyclists travelling around the peninsula. It will link the
Millennium Village development with the Sainsbury's site, and will
provide a safer route from Woolwich Road to the Thames riverside route,
allowing cyclists to avoid the Woolwich Road gyratory system under the
      Blackwall Tunnel approach motorway.
