368Fwd: Organic Training Days - November 2013
- Oct 25, 2013
Organic Training Days
Malta Organic Agriculture Movement will be holding a series of four lectures introducing the organic cultivation of 4 major food plants during the months of November at various localities around Malta.
During the lectures we will be introducing you to various plant families. By building your knowledge of the various plant families you can plan your Crop Rotation, that is the foundation for Organic Farming.
Crop rotation is the practice of growing a series of dissimilar/different types of crops in the same area in sequential seasons.
Crop rotation gives various benefits to the soil. A traditional element of crop rotation is the replenishment of nitrogen through the use of green manure in sequence with cereals and other crops. Crop rotation also mitigates the build-up of pathogens and pests that often occurs when one species is continuously cropped, and can also improve soil structure and fertility by alternating deep-rooted and shallow-rooted plants.
The lectures will also introduce participants to the Organic Regulation and the principles of Organic agriculture and how certification can be achieved. We will also guide you on how to plan your planting and the preparation of the soil according to the plant type.
