Anti-theatrical ethos of the early Orthodox Church
- Dear List:
I thought I would share the document below. I stumbled upon this
doctoral thesis of Andrew Walker White purely by accident, but it
offers a scholarly and insightful look at the arts, especially, for
me, music, in the early Orthodox Church. Ironically, Mr. White wrote
the disseration to earn a Ph. D. in theater, not musicology or
Byzantine studies, but I have never seen a clearer picture in English
of the origins of ecclesiastical Byzantine chant, which is the oldest
known music of the Orthodox Church.

It is a long document, and if you don't have time to read the whole
thing, I recommend you read the abstract and the chapter on music,
beginning on page 92.
I am very interested in your reactions and responses to this dissertation.
