As vet Transactional Paralegal - salary is all
based on the firm that you work for - Skadden, for
example, will work you like a dog and I'll be in the pool
awaiting recognition - great firm to have on your resume
but not a whole lot of experience unless you luck out
and have a partner take you under - watch your
back.
People - realize that you are a revenue generator for
the firm - you get nowhere near your billable rate -
after 17 yrs in NYC I can tell you that you need an
"uncle", a partner that is willing to look out for you
when times get hard and it also helps that the closer
the department ranks are - with associates and
partners the better you'll do. That why I have always
chosen small to mid-size firms, you learn more, you are
more visable and you'll be able to defend yourself
better when you don't make boogie.
Bonuses maybe
somewhat smaller but yopu'll more likely to receive a
bigger piece of the pie.
Although I am a
corporate/securtities specialist - my firm (I now live and work in
Tampa, Fl.) knows that I will do real estate, T&E,
bankruptcy.
For example - policy at this place dictates that I
not be eligible for a year-end bonus but I still
received one.
We will never see BIG$$$$ unless you work
a tobacco litigation firm (a 4th yr para I know
down here got a $25,000 bonus - tobacco case) but I do
believe that if the firm had a good year - you should be
eligible for a bonus of at least 5-10% salary based on
meeting your billables.

Hello all. I am a 32 year old paralegal and have
been practicing for over 10 years. I have worked most
recently in corporate law, real estate, and litigation.
Last year, I relocated from Florida to New York and
got a great job at a start-up in Manhattan. I was the
corporate paralegal for the general counsel, and later (as
the layoffs started), became the Human Resources
Director, Office Manager, Executive Assistant to the CEO
and COO, and the resident MAC expert (most of these
jobs with no prior experience!). I was due for a $6k
raise on my one-year anniversary, 9/13. Unfortunately,
my company closed 9/11 as our main investor lost a
large portion of its portfolio companies which were
housed in the WTC. I am relocating to the Chicago area
once I find a job. My boyfriend and I were there for
Thanksgiving and interviews last week, but no one has bitten
yet. Everything is so slow out there right now. Hope
something comes through soon!
