State Championship Gets Record Number Of Entries

The Goa Basketball Association can claim a victory of sorts, a victory
whose resonance counts for much more than the record 22 teams in the
men's section and seven in the girls section for the State Basketball
      Championship later this week.

"I did not expect such a fantastic response," admitted GBA President
Fr Ralin De Souza as he took time off from a hectic day that included
shooting off letters to the Lusofonia Games Organizing committee and
meeting up with the Sports Authority of Goa(SAG) executive director
      Sandip Jacques.

The State Basketball Championship was shrouded in doubt after the
rival group - - Association of Goan Basketball who claim that they are
the legal body - - issued a diktat to Lusofonia Games probables,
warning them against participation in the championship.

Sadly, the response from clubs, and the subsequent team-lists, should
encourage the GBA that their project is right on track.

"We have got the team lists from participating clubs and except for
three four players from the Lusofonia Games probables, all (others)
will take part," said Fr Ralin.

The State basketball championship has not been held for ages, thanks
largely to a dormant GBA that has now been revived with Fr Ralin at
      the helm.

Even at its peak, and when tournaments were being conducted at regular
intervals, a maximum of 16 teams have taken part.

In the women's category, three to four teams were the norm, although
for some tournaments the organisers were forced to have an exhibition
tie, simply because there were just two teams willing to take part.

"We have to wait and see how many of the teams will continue to be
regulars but for a start, this is encouraging," said the GBA chief.

Teams like Goa Institute of Management(Sanquelim), BITS, Padre
Conceicao College(PCC), Farmagudi Basketeers, Saligao Foxes, Friends
of Basketball, Rangers(Porvorim), Vasco Pacers, Fr Agnel, Verna are
all taking a shot at the championship for the first time. Except for
YMCA Knights, all other regulars have confirmed participation.

Based on performances in the championship, the GBA will select a group
of 24 probables in each category for the National Basketball
      Championship in Delhi.

The probables will go through a short camp to trim down the probables
to 15, while an intensive coaching camp will follow.

The State championship will commence on September 28 with four matches
lined up for the first three days. The final is slotted for October 4.
